Trail Note #2

The Myth of the Neutral Heart

The Myth of the Neutral Heart

We like to think of ourselves as independent. We say things like, "I’m just doing my own thing" or "I’m taking a break from the heavy stuff." But what if I told you that, spiritually and biologically, "neutrality" is a myth?

The Apostle Paul describes this internal reality with startling clarity in Galatians 5:17:

"For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want."

Notice the word conflict. In the original language, this implies a tactical opposition—like two opposing armies. Paul is telling us that our hearts are a battlefield, not a park bench. There is no "demilitarized zone" where you can just exist without being influenced by one side or the other.

We often treat our hearts like a parked car—sitting in neutral, waiting for us to decide which way to move. But because of this "conflict" between the flesh and the Spirit, the human heart is actually more like a boat on a river.

The "flesh"—our old nature, our cravings, and our desire for comfort—is the current. It never stops pulling. If you aren't actively yielding to the Spirit (The Second Yes), you are—by default—yielding to the current.

There is no "Sweden" in spiritual life. As the saying goes: If you aren't a servant of Christ, you are a slave to yourself. You are either being rescued from the current by your devotion, or you are being swept away by the "comfort" of your flesh.

The Second Yes is the moment you stop pretending the boat is stationary. It’s the moment you realize that "doing nothing" is actually a choice to go backwards. Freedom isn't the absence of a Master; it’s the active choice of the right Master. When we walk by the Spirit, we finally get the power to move against the current of our old nature.

Today, look at your "default" settings. When you aren't "trying" to be spiritual, where does your mind go? Paul says the flesh and Spirit are in conflict so that you don't do "whatever you want."

What "fleshly" current is pulling on you today? Is it distraction? Self-pity? The "Safety Zone" of doing nothing?

Identify the current, and give your Second Yes to the Spirit who leads you to freedom.
